Tips on Technique

Gripping the Leet™ Stick

Different people prefer gripping the Leet™ stick in different ways and you can experiment to find whichever method works best for you. Usually, the stick is held in a firm grip between the thumb on one side of the shaft and the four fingers on the other. It’s as easy as that!

Throwing the Ball

Underarm

The underarm throw is the most basic throw in the sport, and is also the most frequent. You can practice this with a friend, or, more easily, on your own against a wall.

  1. With the ball in the stick, hold the stick by your side so that the head of the stick is above the base (to prevent the ball from rolling out).
  2. Next, move your arm backwards and drop your hand in relation to your elbow so that the head of the stick falls below the base. This will cause the ball to begin rolling down the length of the stick.
  3. As the ball starts to move, bring your arm forward in one fluid motion.
  4. Gently flick your wrist as the ball reaches the sweet-spot in the centre of the stick face. This will cause the ball to arch away in the direction the stick was travelling.

Over arm

Mastering the technique of the over arm throw will allow you to throw the ball over much greater distance and will add a great deal to your general abilities as a Leet™ player.

To start, rotate your body sideways towards your throwing arm, and point your front foot and non-throwing arm at the target.

  1. Pull the arm holding the stick backwards, keeping it level with your head so that the top of the stick is below vertical, pointing forwards in the direction of the recipient. Next, in one smooth movement, move your arm back as far behind your shoulder as is comfortable.
  2. Then, change direction, moving your arm quickly forward. As you bring the limb forward toward the target, raise your wrist so that the stick’s head moves back beyond vertical. This movement will cause the ball to roll up to the face of the stick.
  3. Once you feel the ball is playable (in the same sweet spot as for the underarm throw), flick the wrist rapidly forwards. This will propel the ball away from the stick toward its destination.

Catching the Ball

Both the underarm and over arm catch have the same basic goal: to ensure the ball ends up inside your stick and under your control. The way to ensure the ball is caught cleanly is to connect with the ball in such a way that it hits the face of the stick at an angle and then rolls smoothly inside. Gently pulling the stick backwards with the ball as it lands will also help prevent the ball bouncing out on impact.

  1. When receiving an underarm throw, angle the stick slightly above or below the horizontal, depending on the speed and trajectory of the ball.
  2. During an over arm catch, aim to point your stick at the incoming ball.
  3. Either way, during an ideal catch the first sound you will hear is the ball hitting the end cap inside your stick – not the ball hitting the face of the stick.
